Sustainable Packaging Options for Small Businesses
Share
Choosing sustainable packaging as a small business comes with genuine trade-offs — cost, minimum order quantities, and supplier reliability all factor in, often more heavily than they do for larger companies with more purchasing power. Here's an honest overview of the actual options, drawn from our own experience navigating these decisions.
Recyclable Kraft and Corrugated Materials
Unbleached kraft paper and corrugated cardboard remain among the most accessible and cost-effective sustainable packaging options for small businesses, widely recyclable through standard kerbside collection and generally available at low minimum order quantities compared to more specialised alternatives.
Biodegradable and Compostable Void Fill
Paper-based crinkle fill, cornstarch-based packing peanuts, and similar compostable alternatives to plastic air pillows have become considerably more accessible to smaller order volumes in recent years, though they typically carry a modest cost premium over conventional plastic fill — a trade-off worth weighing against your specific margins and order volume.
Water-Based Inks and Adhesives
For branded packaging specifically, water-based inks and plant-based adhesives are a genuinely accessible upgrade over solvent-based alternatives, often available from the same printing suppliers at only a marginal cost difference — one of the easier sustainable packaging decisions for a small business to make without significant additional expense.
The Real Trade-Off: Minimum Order Quantities
The most common obstacle small businesses face with sustainable packaging isn't the material cost per unit — it's the minimum order quantity many specialised sustainable packaging suppliers require, which can tie up more capital upfront than a smaller business can comfortably commit. Researching suppliers specifically willing to work with lower minimum orders is often more valuable than chasing the single "most sustainable" material on paper.
Where to Start if Budget Is Tight
Rather than overhauling every packaging element simultaneously, prioritise the single highest-volume packaging component first — usually the outer shipping mailer — since that change delivers the largest cumulative impact per pound spent, with other elements (void fill, branded inserts) following as budget allows.
