How to Wash Hemp Fabric | Hemp Clothing Care Guide

 

One of hemp's most underrated qualities is that, unlike many fabrics, it actually improves with wear and washing — softening over time rather than breaking down. But getting that benefit depends on caring for it correctly. Here's how.

Wash Cold, Wash Gentle

Hemp fibres hold up best in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle. Hot water can cause more rapid fibre breakdown over time and, in blended fabrics, can contribute to shrinkage. Cold washing also uses significantly less energy per cycle — a small compounding benefit that suits hemp's broader sustainability profile.

Skip the Fabric Softener

It sounds counterintuitive, but fabric softener actually works against hemp over time — it coats the fibres with a residue that reduces the fabric's natural breathability and can trap odour rather than releasing it. Hemp softens naturally through washing and wear alone; it doesn't need help from a softening agent.

Air Dry When You Can

Line drying or flat drying preserves fibre integrity far better than a tumble dryer, which subjects hemp to repeated heat and mechanical stress. If a machine dryer is unavoidable, use the lowest heat setting and remove the garment while still slightly damp to finish air drying.

Turn It Inside Out Before Washing

This simple step reduces surface friction and pilling on the outward-facing side of the fabric during the wash cycle — a small habit that noticeably extends the visible life of a garment.

Store It Properly Between Wears

Fold rather than hang heavier hemp pieces to avoid stretching at the shoulders over time, and store in a cool, dry space away from direct sunlight, which can gradually fade natural fibres.
