Most candles don't fail because of bad wax — they fail because of how they're burned. A few small habits, applied consistently, can add hours of burn time and noticeably stronger scent throw to almost any candle you own, including ours.

The First Burn Matters More Than You Think

Wax has memory. Whatever pattern is set on the first burn tends to repeat for the rest of the candle's life. If you extinguish it too early — before the wax pool reaches the edges of the container — you risk tunnelling: a narrow well forms down the centre, leaving unused wax stranded on the sides for the rest of the candle's life.

The fix: on your first burn, let the candle run until the melted wax pool reaches all the way to the edge of the jar — typically one hour per inch of container diameter. It takes patience once, but it sets up every burn after it.

Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

Before relighting, trim the wick to roughly ¼ inch. A too-long wick burns hotter and faster, produces excess soot, and can cause the flame to flicker unevenly. This single habit is the difference between a clean, steady flame and a smoky, uneven one.

Respect the Burn Window

Aim to burn a candle for one to four hours at a time. Shorter than that, and the wax won't melt evenly across the surface. Longer than that, and the container can overheat, which shortens the candle's overall lifespan and can affect the wick.

Keep It Away From Drafts

A flame that flickers constantly is usually reacting to airflow — near a window, fan, or high-traffic doorway. Drafts cause uneven melting and faster wax consumption, so a stable spot on a flat, heat-safe surface will always outperform a "prettier" but draughtier one.

Store It Properly Between Burns

Keep candles in a cool, dry spot out of direct sunlight — heat and UV can soften wax and fade fragrance oils over time, even before the candle is lit. If your candle has a lid, use it between burns to protect the scent and keep dust out of the wax pool.
